The North Face 100 is a 100km ultra trail run which winds its way through the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia.

It’s a technical race featuring thousands of rocky steps, transitional ladders and several hours of running through the dark. This will be my second year in a row at the event.

1001 Runners take part from around the world, including pros from the likes of The North Face & Salomon. Due to the nature of the event and the remoteness of the Blue Mountains, each runner has to carry mandatory kit in their packs for the entire duration of the race. The kit can be spot checked at any of the 5 checkpoints, including the finish line; failure to produce an item of mandatory clothing or kit will result in a time penalty.

I finished the race in 14hrs 27mins, which placed me 198th out of 1001 runners. Completing the run within 20 hours earned me the event’s prestigious bronze belt buckle, an incredible personal achievement.

At the end of April Snow+Rock partnered with Columbia and OutDry to host an event where members of outdoor press were invited to witness the key properties of OutDry being tested at SATRA (the world’s leading research and technology centre in Northampton).

SATRA:

SATRA is a remarkable facility used to create benchmarks for standards across the world. Formed in 1919 with the original purpose of helping manufacturers and suppliers to evolve. Since their early years, SATRA has developed significantly and today the brand is recognised and respected in over 70 countries across a diverse spread of product sectors.

Through its commitment to innovative research, SATRA has contributed to many advances in product industries. One better-known example is the boot worn by the British Expedition in conquering Mount Everest in 1953, which was designed and built by SATRA to help the climbers stay safe and comfortable and ensure that no-one suffered from frostbite (the original boot which was worn by John Hunt is pictured at the centre).

SATRA also revolutionised footwear production with a process that became known as ‘heat setting’, which reduced production times and achieved consistent and high levels of shape retention. Heat setting was seen as one of the most significant technological contributions to shoemaking and received the Queen’s Award for Industry. Advances made in footwear design, materials and process since then have led to a multi-billion dollar global industry.

THE EVENT:

The day commenced with a short but convincing presentation on the properties of OutDry waterproof technology compared to ‘bootie’ construction methods.

Bootie construction methods were introduced in 1983 and are still used to make a waterproof lining in footwear. A seam-sealed, sock shaped,‘bootie’ is inserted into the footwear and anchored at key points to make sure no water penetrates through to the foot. However, this leaves a space between the bootie and the upper, where water can gather when it penetrates through the upper material .

Detail of ‘Bootie’ construction

Conversely, OutDry is an innovative technology consisting of a patented lamination process where the waterproof/breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the shoe (or glove), perfectly sealing any possible water entry point. With OutDry there is no gap in between the upper and the membrane where water can penetrate and stagnate

Detail of OutDry construction

Following the SATRA team to the testing facility we saw a range of tests to show the difference in performance between technologies. The machines were specifically created by SATRA to find any possible areas of weakness that might result in a leak.

At the conclusion of the tests the bootie construction took on water and gained weight, which would mean the wearer’s feet would not only be damp but they would be exerting extra energy carrying excess weight. The boot would have to be dried out and the standing water would have an effect on the life of the boot.

The OutDry footwear came out comparably dry with minimal water gain. The emphatic visual demonstrations delivered a convincing message that OutDry outperforms others on extreme waterproofness.

COLUMBIA OUTDRY RANGE:

Columbia was so impressed with OutDry’s innovation they purchased the company that invented the technology with all related patents and now use it in all their footwear. Their summer range of footwear includes the Conspiracy trail running shoes, which are exclusive to Snow+Rock.

Now that the snow has melted and the weather has returned to something resembling the seasonal norm, the time has come for our staff to put away their Skis, Snowboards and Ice Axes and get ready for new rock climbing, camping and walking adventures. In preparation for the new season, our training and buying teams set about organising the summer 2013, Outdoor Product Launch Event, which allows store managers, online sales staff and representatives from head office to try out a great selection of kit from our summer ranges over two days in the Peak District National Park.

Having been lucky enough to receive an invitation, I set off early on Tuesday morning for the Peak District. I arrived in Edale at midday, just in time for a bite to eat and the chance to meet new faces. We were then broken up into small groups of five or six to visit each of the brands that were attending the event.

Vango

The first brand of the day was Vango, who had brought a selection of their Airbeam tents. These tents feature an innovative method of support, using air tubes (similar to giant bike inner tubes) in place of poles. Several members of our group were sceptical to start with and had a lot of questions, but any uncertainties were quickly put to rest as we witnessed the result of years of research and development that have been invested by Vango to perfect the technology. There was a quick demo from the rep and then a race to see who could put up an Airbeam tent up the fastest, which was won by Lucy from our Chillfactore store.

Vaude / Klymit

Next on our list was a presentation by Chris Nichols (Chris used to be a member of our buying team and now represents Vaude, Smartwool and Klymit). He began by demonstrating the Terratrio range of tents; specially designed versions of the classic Vaude Taurus that have been tailored for the UK market and offer incredible value for money. While they were not the most advanced tents of the day, we all agreed that they are a great buy. Robust and simple to pitch, these are great tents for people who want a lot of ‘bang for their buck’. After we had seen the tents we moved on to the Klymit Inertia X Frame mat. It looked quite space aged and we thought that it might be a bit of a niche product, but when we tried it out we were really impressed by how comfortable it was, even when you were lying on your side. The gaps in the frame have a double function; not only do they keep the mat’s weight to a minimum, they also allow your sleeping bag to “loft” in the space created, which provides more effective insulation.

Chris explaining the Vaude range

Mountain Hardwear

Mountain Hardwear brought several tents for us to look at including the Skyledge DP, Hoopla, Direct 2, and Yurtini. The selection demonstrated everything from a super-light tarp style tent that uses a trekking pole as its main support, right through to a narrow single skin alpinist tent designed for fast and light summit assaults in the Alps and greater ranges. The Hoopla and Yurtini were probably the most unique in comparison to other products that are available due to their structure. Both tents have a central pole design that is similar to that of a tipi, with a pole that is made into a hoop and pressed into a shelf to extend the headroom. These tents have the advantage of being really lightweight and quick to pitch whilst still being able to withstand strong winds.

Exped

Whilst the Klymit mat is built for lightweight, technical performance, Exped mats are built for comfort. A cosy bed away from home, these air mattresses have a down or synthetic fill (depending on the model) that offers an unparalleled level of insulation. We had a brief lesson on the history of the brand followed by a demonstration that showed just how warm the mats are and how easy they are to inflate. A couple of the guys in the group made it their mission to get hold of one to test overnight as they wanted to ensure a good night’s sleep, and by the next morning they were pretty pleased that they did!

Trying out the mats

Mountain Safety Research (MSR) / Thermarest

Next up was Mountain Safety Research (MSR). We stock a large range of their tents and it was really useful to get to see key features such as the specialist pole construction for maximum headroom, high rise fly sheet for ventilation, and the extra high bathtub floor in action. What impressed me the most was just how spacious the tents felt when you got inside, despite having a small footprint. Any extra space is great for those extended periods where you might have to spend a few hours sheltering from the rain. Four people sitting and playing cards in a normal tent can quickly become uncomfortable.

Rab

We arrived at the Rab tent to see a pile of super-warm sleeping bags awaiting us; we made a quick beeline for them and got comfortable. There was a swift presentation, which took us through the range and demonstrated the different types of down used in Rab sleeping bags. It was really interesting to see the visual differences between European duck and goose down. In both cases you could see the amount of loft (the space taken up by a given amount of down) that down could produce and we were excited that were going to get to try out the bags that night.

North Face

The North Face was the final brand of the day and provided a huge range of tents and a selection of sleeping bags for us to look over. We started off with the VE25, a tent whose pedigree can be traced back to the slopes of Everest and other mountains in the Himalaya. The tent is designed to withstand the most extreme conditions, which was demonstrated by the rep who jumped onto it with his full body weight, resulting in the tent bouncing back up like nothing had happened. We then moved on to the Tadpole and Big Fat Frog, which are both great tents for the camping in the UK. The presentation culminated with The North Face’s range of high spec sleeping bags. The down bags have a really interesting feature; synthetic fill is incorporated into the underside of the bag, preventing the compression that you get with down for extra warmth and comfort.

Neil Gresham Talk (Sherpa)

The day came to a close with a much-anticipated talk by one of Britain’s best climbers, Neil Gresham. He began with a brief overview of his climbing career to date, before launching into tales of his most recent adventures, which included a trip to the Arctic Circle looking for new ice climbing routes and his completion of the Triple Crown Challenge in Wales. The Triple Crown Challenge involved climbing a hard boulder problem (Jerry’s Roof V9), a traditional climb (Lord of the Flies – E6 6a), and an ice climb (Central Icefall Direct VI). It took Neil three attempts to achieve all three in one day, and even then it was only by the skin of his teeth. The day culminated with a very close call, as the ice that he had been climbing just before he topped out on the final stage challenge collapsed with a loud crack.

Neil’s talk was a great end to an educational and entertaining day. Fuelled by enthusiasm and tales of adventure, we looked forward to the walk and climbs of the following day as well as the prospect of trying out more pieces of innovative and exciting kit.

Lucy from Head Office took a trip to Niseko, Japan and tells us what she found there..

It took 18 hours of travelling to get there, but as soon as our coach pulled into the welcome centre in Niseko we could tell we were in for a treat. From day one the snow didn’t stop falling and even the village roads had to be cleared constantly. Every morning there was at least a foot of fresh snow outside our door and it continued to fall all day to top up the (already powdery) piste. I’ve never seen so much snow!

Niseko is famed for its fluffy stuff, but I wasn’t quite expecting it to be so abundant. After venturing out of the gates to the un-groomed/un-patrolled areas there was no going back to the piste. Floating on the powder darting in and out of the trees (not to mention hugging the occasional trunk by accident), I couldn’t have been further away from the European resorts I have visited previously. Add to that no lift queues and fresh snow crab and king prawns for lunch and you’ve got the best days snowboarding I’ve ever had (if you don’t include trying to eat a bowl of rice with chopsticks)! To top it all off the slopes were open until 9pm every night so if you haven’t had your fill throughout the day, you can board by floodlight into the evening and try and beat your personal best speed on the empty piste on your way back down.

Every time you take a lift to the top, it’s like a new day, as the snow has covered the tracks of the people before you and you can board the whole mountain off piste right to the bottom again.

Watching the wave of snow follow a fellow boarder is certainly a brilliant sight, and if you do happen to fall, knowing the deep snow will cushion the blow, is definitely a comfort…. The only problem being trying to get back up and onto your feet again!

If it’s clear enough and it stops snowing you can see the volcano in the distance, but get your camera out quick as the views in Niseko don’t last long, within 2 or 3 minutes it will disappear as the snow closes in and won’t be seen again for days.

There is only one downside to Niseko… ‘THE HOLIDAY’! Now the holiday is a run that might sound like a dream, but in real terms it’s a snowboarders nightmare, it’s a meandering gentle ‘family’ run that has long areas of flat tracks that creep up on you and before you know it you’re walking the rest of the way, along with every other snowboarder who wasn’t expecting a zero gradient and a hike. We quickly learned not to venture off where our only option was to cut back onto this ‘dream run’ or pick up enough speed before you hit the immense flat section and you might just make it through. But if 1 avoidable run is the only downside to a resort then that’s fine by me.

It was a sad day when we left Niseko and we all vowed to return to Japan, but the adventure wasn’t over… next stop…TOKYO!

First, a very brief introduction to me and why I’m writing this blog post. I’m 49 years old, married with three teenage kids and I work for Snow+Rock (as Multichannel Director). Although I love sport passionately, I am, unlike virtually everyone else who works at Snow+Rock, not obsessive about winter sports. I skied a few times in my 20′s, but a combination of family, cost, other sporting trips and generally not getting round to it, meant only two visits to the slopes in the last 25 years, with the most recent around a decade ago.

When in early January I was invited to the eConsultancy Digital Ski trip, a five day extravaganza in Courchevel, I was a little reticent. Would I still remember how to ski? Would I be fit enough? Would I cope with the après ski? Would I let down the UK’s premier snowsports retailer by being technically backward? And would I still fit into my C&A one-piece that had lain unused except by moths in my cupboard for 10 years.

Fortunately I didn’t have to worry about the last of these as my employer agreed to let me loose on the sample rail. And what a sample rail. A blizzard of top class skiwear lay in wait. Top brands like Schoffel, Eider, Spyder and The North Face – all from our catalogue photoshoot and barely worn. What to choose? I alighted on Kjus, one of our very top brands, selecting the Fusion Jacket and the Formula Pant, both masterpieces of fabric engineering equipped with every feature you could possibly imagine.

I also needed skis and here Snow+Rock also came good, allowing me to borrow a pair of Salomon BBR 8.0s, our favourite ski since their launch in Winter 2011. The surfboard styling was certainly different to the long planks I had skied on last time out, and I was assured by everyone that they would make skiing as easy as, well, falling down a hill.

So, I went on the trip, but what did I learn?

First, skiing is genuinely like riding a bike. It took a few minutes to warm up the muscles and few more to get into a rhythm, but within very little time at all it was as though I’d never been away. I even had the same quirks – turning left much better than turning right, hunching the shoulders like Tommy Cooper and progressively losing control the further I got down the mountain. With one fairly major wipe-out on the first morning to remind myself that falling doesn’t really hurt, I was away.

Second, the kit really is much better than it used to be. Yes, the Kjus outfit is on the expensive side, but, oh boy, does it perform. It offered great protection in all conditions – even at minus 15 I needed on a couple of levels of baselayer to keep me warm – and its ultra light weight and close fit meant I hardly noticed I had it on. And when it rained – yes, it rained at 2,000 metres – it allowed not a single drop to get through its breathable skin.

Also the skis. The BBRs have been a favourite of our teams in Snow+Rock since they were launched in Winter 2011 and they are a great all-round ski. On the piste they were fast and accurate and made turns almost with no involvement from me. The coped well with icier slopes, allowing good grip and sharp edging, and when it snowed – which it did, heavily – they really came into their own, seeming to float over the powder. All in all, a massive improvement on the skis of yore.

Third, while it does help to be ski fit, you can get by with basic sport fitness. A degree of over-excitement on the first day meant that day two was a little challenging, but skiing is a sport for which the phrase ‘second wind’ seems to have been invented. Faced with a nice piste in sunny conditions the mind says ‘definitely’ and the body always seems to be able to come up with the goods.

Fourth, whilst keeping up with the youngsters on the slopes was achievable, keeping up with them in the après ski was most definitely not. When did the craze for shots emerge? And, more pertinently, why? We used to be happy with a couple of glasses of wine and a fondue – Mr Jagermeister seems to have changed all of that.

Aside from the shots, I had a great time and reinvigorated my enthusiasm for the slopes. I’ll definitely be taking my family for a trip next year, and I’m already working on persuading the company to deck us out in Kjus.

Every February a team of 10 or 12 from the Snow+Rock buying and marketing teams head to Munich for the annual ISPO trade show. Company Director Kevin Young tells us more about the impromptu ski trip afterwards…

ISPO is one of the biggest winter and outdoor sports expo events in the world. Every year it blows our minds with the vast array of brands and products on show there. After 4 days of immersing yourself in the best winter-sports gear in the world, the thing you want most is to go skiing or snowboarding, and this year a few of us made time to go to St Anton in Austria for 3 days after the show.

Like all the best ideas this one started in the pub, and it turned out to be one of our best ideas ever. We arrived in a very snowy St Anton after driving through snowfall most of the way from Munich. There was snow piled up everywhere in the town, which is always a good sign. We grabbed a late dinner and headed to back to the Hotel Reselehof to prepare for a big day skiing. We had arranged to meet our guide at 9am the next morning so we got all our gear ready before we went to bed.

We set off to meet our guide the next morning, it was still snowing and visibility wasn’t great. The first run was a challenge for me (recovering from a broken toe!) with deep snow hiding moguls and ruts in the rolling clouds. But the quality of the snow was superb. Deep, light and getting deeper by the hour. Our guide Klaus was of course an amazing skier and had fantastic local knowledge from his days working for the resort’s avalanche safety team. He took us to some fantastic terrain where visibility was helped by sticking to the trees wherever possible and the snow was deep and mostly untracked. He tested us during the day to see if our skills were up to our ambition, we covered a lot of ground well off the beaten track once he had confidence that we were not too much of a liability in steeper and more challenging terrain. This was an amazing day.

Day 2 and we were joined by our old friend Gunnar who runs the Hotel Reselehof. Straight away we were back into a world of untracked powder, cornices, chutes and magical forests. Gunnar has lived in St Anton for 35 years and said he skied some new terrain that day as we continued to follow Klaus with adrenalin pumping around our bodies. Snow continued to fall and cloud was constantly rolling through, but with Klaus leading the way we always had just enough visibility to enjoy the powder which was now bottomless.

Day 3, our last day. We met Klaus, just the 3 of us today, he had plans for us and wasted no time in getting the day off to a steep and deep start. The weather was beginning to clear and the resort staff were hard at work trying to get the pistes open following days of heavy snowfall. Pistes were the last thing on our minds, but we would have loved to be first down the from the top of the Schindler Spitze before the piste bashers laid their fresh corduroy tracks (see picture). We turned our backs as the piste was being laid and followed Klaus into the deepest snow I have ever experienced with perfect visibility and not a track in front of us. Every turn created a wave of snow that came up over my head and temporarily blinded me and blocked my mouth and nose. It was a total assault on the senses and we were loving every second of it. We kept this up, run after run via Stuben, Langen and finally the Maroi valley. We had to take 2 buses during the day to get back to the ski lifts, and spent a bit of time hiking up and over a few hills to access yet more untracked terrain. We finally admitted to Klaus that we were tired and needed lunch, it was 4 o’clock! Our energy was all spent and we were as happy as we could ever hope to be.

When we left the next morning the sky was clear and the weather was cold (-17 c). We didn’t care, we have all skied and boarded a lot over the last 20 years or more and we had just experienced the best 3 days skiing of our lives, and we were so exhausted we could hardly walk. And all those people heading out to find some fresh powder would find that someone had been there before them. Thanks Klaus.

We all agreed we have to this again next year……

In order to maximize your time and enjoyment out on the slopes you need to keep warm. The secret to keeping warm is layering and warming your ‘core’ (vital organs). If your core is warm then your body can heat your extremities. If your core is cold then your body will focus on warming your vital organs and your extremities will become cold – simple? Here is our guide to layering:

The Base Layer

This is the most important layer in the system as it sits closest to the skin. Without a good quality base layer, the performance of each subsequent layer will be compromised. This layer must be close fitting to maximise the fabric’s moisture wicking capabilities, allowing perspiration to be transported away from the skin and out through each layer. Look for technical wicking fabrics or merino wool, which has natural wicking properties – and doesn’t smell after a few days of hard skiing! Cotton, by comparison, absorbs moisture and holds it next to your skin making you feel damp and cold when resting. Compression baselayers can also aid muscle recovery.

Merino wool: Icebreaker, Smartwool, Mons Royale, Helly Hansen.

Technical garments: Arc’teryx, Helly Hansen, The North Face, Odlo.

Compression: Skins, Under Armour.

The Mid Layer

The mid layer provides you with versatile insulation, both on and off the slopes. It must be highly breathable to allow moisture transportation from your base layer out. In cold conditions, it is important to have these layers to trap air as they provide extra warmth, and by adding or removing mid layers, you can maintain a comfortable body temperature. Wearing multiple thin layers is less bulky and more versatile than wearing a single thick layer. A gilet (body warmer) is a useful addition to any layering system, keeping the core warm without restricting arm movement. Most ski and snowboarding brands produce mid-layer garments with their ranges.

Campagnolo Men’s Carbonio Fleece £44.99

Helly Hansen Women’s Graphic Hoodie £74.99

The Outer Layer

The jacket and pants form the outer layer of your clothing system and are designed to protect you from the snow and wind. As well as the outer fabric being breathable, both the jackets and pants will feature zippered venting to allow you to ventilate and manage excess body heat. This outer layer should also offer durable protection against the abrasive effects of snow, ice and equipment, yet be light enough to allow for sustained activity.

Most jackets and pants will have some form of lining or insulation to add comfort and warmth. Choose a level of insulation that suits your personal preference, and the outer temperatures.

Shell jackets are lightweight, packable and offer protection from the elements outside, but they will not have any insulating property, instead relying on an insulation layer worn underneath. A versatile and great value for money form of outerwear is the 3-in-1 jacket, which consists of an outer jacket and a zip-in/zip-out insulation layer, allowing you to adapt your clothing as the weather changes.

Soft Shell jackets are ideal if your activity requires a high level of aerobic output, as they not only offer exceptional water resistance and windproofing, but also deliver maximum breathability and allow perspiration and vapour to evaporate. They are a great option for spring skiing.

Mobility is another factor to consider. Modern garments now feature fabrics with 2-way or 4-way stretch providing enhanced levels of performance and greater comfort. This can also allow garments to have a more fitted style without restricting movement. In addition, advances in technology now allow manufacturers to create stretch fabrics that maintain their waterproof properties as they stretch, so you can now have it all!

For the month of January, we’re giving away a CAPiTA snowboard, signed by Scott Stevens….but you may be wondering..who is he?!

Scott Stevens is a member of the CAPiTA snowboard team and really good at what he does. Originally from Westfield, Massachusetts, he started snowboarding when he was 11. His Dad took him for skiing lessons originally, but he then went back to snowboarding later on in his teens.

Scott at work

He loves the Scott Stevens Pro board because it’s the based on the technical design of the Ultrafear FK, but features his favourite colours.

More about the ‘Sleepy Stevens’ board

This is the first ever Scott Stevens Pro Model. Inspired by the Ultrafear FK, this very special board features an upgraded construction with carbon fiber load bars for increased pop. This board is produced in extremely limited quantities for select retailers only.

Now who you know who Scott is, why don’t you enter the competition to win his favourite board!
