Who is Candide Thovex?

Candide Thovex

Candide Thovex has become a major figure in skiing, taking three gold medals at the Winter X Games in three different disciplines (Big Air in 2000, Super Pipe in 2003 and Slopestyle in 2007). With these three achievements across the Atlantic, and some choice performances relayed on the internet, the Frenchman became a freeski icon, inspiring several generations of skiers and snowboarders around the world. Able to turn his hand to anything, he created his very own event in La Clusaz, the Candide Invitational, to which he invites the top freeskiiers to compete on ramps of never-before-seen mammoth proportions.

Unfortunately in 2007, Candide fell and seriously injured his back (broken vertebrae). Everyone feared his skiing career was over, but he came back more daring than ever. And he needed to be daring, for it was on the steep slopes that he made his competitive comeback. In January 2010, he won the Red Bull Line Catcher in Vars and a few weeks later became the Freeride World Champion (Freeride World Tour) at Verbier at his first attempt at the course. The feat sent shockwaves through the world of alpine sports.

Candide has reached the top. There is just one thing he hasn’t done yet, and that is to make a movie. The idea has been in the pipeline for several years… Quiksilver, who has sponsored him for over 15 years, has asked him to shoot his first feature-length film. Now that he’s back in peak physical condition, he can finally make this long-harboured dream areality.

The birth of FEW WORDS

Freeskiing star Candide Thovex has won the all the major titles during his career (Winter XGames, Freeride World Tour). But titles and trophies alone cannot explain his incredible popularity, on and off the mountain. This master of style was also a pioneering director of films about his own skiing feats. In his videos Rastafaride and Candide Kamera, which he starred in and directed, Candide documented his adventures and achievements on film and then on the web, with an attention to detail which is still highly influential. Each episode a shortfilm in itself, he creates real suspense and reaches out to an ever wider audience. After winning the highest level international contests, Candide set about directing his first feature film with the energy and perfectionism that have become his trademark.

FEW WORDS (the script)

This feature-length film produced using state-of-the-art camera’s and techniques explores the life of Candid Thovex: his childhood in La Clusaz (France), his achievements, his injuries, interviews with his friends and family, his adventures and new sessions with renowned international skiers.

Somewhere between a biopic and a pure action movie, Few Words draws the viewer into the world of Candide Thovex. Throughout the film, Candide intimately evokes the high points of his dazzling career as well as his philosophy on sport and life, all interspersed with breath-taking action sequences in the most stunning landscapes.

Accompanied by an incredible soundtrack, the film is being edited by one of the best in the business, New Zealander MattPain (Process Films). Every action, every sequence, every shot was dissectedand evaluated to make sure the film stay’s faithful to Candide’s spirit and vision.

The skiing sequences were filmed all around the world (Canada, United States, Austria, Switzerland, France, Southern hemisphere), and required several days of shooting to perfectly capture even the briefest shot.
